Author Biography

Robert Louis Stevenson was born on 13 November 1850 in Edinburgh. He was a Scottish novelist, poet, essayist and travel writer. Despite suffering from serious bronchial illness for most of his life, he continued to travel and write extensively. His writing career witnessed a turn when he travelled to Samoa in the 1890s. Seeing the impact of the first-world influence in South Sea Islands, his writing shifted from romance and adventure to dark realism. His works reveal him to be a social critic and a witness to the colonial history of the Pacific Islands. After he died from a stroke in 1894, half of his original manuscripts were lost and several of his papers were sold and auctioned off by his heirs during the First World War.
